Abstract: In this study the effect of dispersant on the dispersion of carbon fibers in non-polar was investigated. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fiber, which was difficult to disperse, was selected in our study. Ionic MLBH and nonionic SCAT were chose as the dispersants. SEM and FTIR were used to characterize the surface morphology and chemical composition of the leached and non-leached carbon fiber. Dispersion state, sedimentation time and turbidity value were used to measure the dispersion result of carbon fiber in non-polar matrix. It was found that both ionic MLBH and nonionic SCAT could significantly improve the dispersion of carbon fiber. Besides, the effect of ionic MLBH was better than that of nonionic SCAT. The optimal leaching silk concentration of MLBH and SCAT were 0.3 % and 2.0 % respectively.
