Abstract: The high-density polyethylene (PE-HD)/polystyrene (PS) blends were prepared by a HAAKE torque rheometer using poly(styrene-b-ethylene-butylene-b-styrene) (SEBS) elastomer as an impact modifier, and the compatibilizing effect of SEBS on this blending system was investigated by a scanning electron microscope, rotary rheometer, impact tester, thermogravimetric analyzer and differential scanning calorimeter. The results confirmed an effective compatibilizing effect of SEBS on the blending system. However, the aggregation was observed when the SEBS content was higher than 8 wt %, which led to a decrease in compatibility of the blending system. There is also no influence on the heat resistance of the blends from SEBS, whereas the melting point of PE-HD phase decreased slightly due to the introduction of SEBS. The notched Izod impact strength was improved significantly with an increase of SEBS content.
