Abstract: To analyze the stress distributions of electrofusion joints of polyethylene (PE) and its composite pipes, a finite element model of these joints subjected to internal pressure and axial force was established by means of the Abaqus finite element analysis software. The effects of pipe type and strength on the failure mode and burst pressure of electrofusion joints were investigated, and then short-term burst tests were conducted to verify the model. The results indicated that failure mode of electrofusion joint of PE pipe presented a ductile failure. The strength of reinforced thermoplastic pipe (RTP) influenced the failure mode and burst pressure of electrofusion joints. The failure mode transferred from pipe failure to electrofusion coupler failure with an increase of strength. The burst pressure increased with the strength of RTP at first and then tended to became stable.
