Abstract: Poly(vinyl formal) (PVF) was modified with hydrolyzed tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) via a solgel process. The effects of TEOS content on the physical and mechanical properties of PVF foam were studied using fourier transform infrared spectrometer(FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis(TG). When TEOS content was 15 % based on PVA, the foam showed an initial decomposition temperature of 322.5 ℃, which was 94 ℃ higher than that of virgin PVF.
Key words: tetraethoxysilane, Poly (vinyl formal), cellular plastics, thermal stability
