Research Progress in Flame Retardant Modification of Natural Fibers and Their Polymer-Matrix Composites

Abstract: Natural fibers and their reinforced composite have been widely used in civil and automotive industries due to their excellent mechanical properties, low cost and eco-friendly characteristics. However, flammability is always an inevitable problem in the applications of natural fibers and their reinforced polymer-matrix composites. Therefore, the research on the flame retardant modification for corresponding products has attracted more and more attention. This paper reviewed the latest research progress in the flame retardant modification of natural fibers and their polymer-matrix composites, and their development and applications were prospected.
