Abstract: The aging of PVA on heating in the presence of oxygen were investigated. The conjugated double bounds were observed by FTIR&XPS, which confirmed the elimination reaction of hydroxyl groups from poly (vinyl alcohol) at high temperature. By introduction of composite stabilizers of phosphates and phenols into PVA, the elimination of hydroxyl groups was effectively inhibited, which was evidenced by the decrease torque of PVA melt and yellow index.
